Chapter 2

LEADING IN PREPARING

FOR THE FUTURE

If you were given an assignment to be ready in one month to play in a sport that you knew nothing about and had never played before, to repair a lawn mower engine without help, or to write your own computer program, what would you do?  You would likely spend much time and effort to be prepared by the end of the month.  You would read and study from books, watch others performing what you need to learn, ask questions of those who could already perform the activity, and practice on your own or with others (preferably someone who is better than you are).  You would diligently prepare for your upcoming “test” of your work of preparation.

Of what greater importance is your preparation to become a Godly adult?  Approximately eighteen years of preparation may seem like a long time.  If you were given eighteen years to learn to repair a lawn mower engine you would likely forget about it until the “testing” time approaches.  To prepare for a lifetime of service to the Lord is much more important and requires the full time of childhood and adolescence to listen, watch others, learn, practice, ask questions, and seek counsel for problems.  Prov. 24:3,27  Ps. 144:12

Student Exercise 2.1

You should now have a “vision” for how the Lord will use you as an adult, even though you may not know exactly what you will be doing.  Prov. 29:18  Phil. 3:13,14  What are some of the future responsibilities or future positions that you likely will have that you should now look ahead to and be preparing for?  Look up each verse or set of verses and write in the possible position that you may have as an adult.  You can answer some in one word and others in several words.

1. Gen. 2:24   ____________________________________________

2. Heb. 10:25    Ps. 133:1  __________________________________

7. Prov. 31:10    1 Tim. 6:11,12  A _______________________woman

    or a ________________man.

9. Ps. 100:2a ____________________________________________

Student Exercise 2.2

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.  Prov. 20:11  Many are watching you as you grow up and prepare to be a Godly, useful adult—the Lord, your parents, relatives, neighbors, pastor, people in your church, people in the community, and perhaps people or angels from Heaven.  Heb. 12:1  How should you be preparing for your future responsibilities and positions in life?  How should you be leading others as they make preparation to serve their Creator?  Look up each verse and match the reference to the things that you should be doing every day of your life.

Ps. 119:11          James 1:19          Ps. 100:2

Deut. 6:5            2 Tim. 2:15           1 Cor. 11:1
