Chapter 2

CONTENTMENT

A person who shows contentment in his life has a habit of being satisfied with what is given to him or with what is taken from him; he is also at peace through the tests and trials of life.  A contented person does not want what he can't have or shouldn't have, nor does he complain about circumstances in his life.

Contentment in your life will come only through a trust in and dependence upon the Lord to provide all that you need in life.  Some of these needs will be the unpleasant experiences of discipline and trials planned by the Lord.  Sometimes you will need to do without something that you want to have.  Pray that the Lord will help you to be content with all that He knows that you need in your daily life.

It is wrong to have the attitude of, “I am content with my spiritual growth and with my service for the Lord.”  This is not contentment, but rather self-satisfaction felt as a result of pride.  Constantly strive to grow spiritually (2 Peter 3:18) and to do more for the Lord each day.  Luke 17:10

Student Exercise 2.1

In what areas of your life does God expect you to be contented?  Look up each verse and write the reference in front of the proper explanation for the verse.

                       Phil. 4:11                    1 Tim. 6:6                    Phil. 4:13

                       Ec. 6:9                         Rom. 8:28                   Phil. 4:6

                                                           Heb. 13:5

1.__________________ I should be content and worry about nothing. I should ask the Lord for anything that I need.

2.__________________ I should be content with what God has provided for me; my parents, house, friends, food, etc. I should not allow myself to want that which I see others have.

3.__________________ My words should not show that I want what others have. I should be content with what I already have, because the Lord carefully watches over me to take care of me.

4.__________________ I should be content in whatever condition that I am in and through whatever circumstances that I must live through.

5.__________________ To the world the greatest gain is money and things. My greatest gain is to seek and to work to become more Godly, and to be content with the things and circumstances of my life.

6.__________________ The things that I have, the circumstances that I live with, the school that I attend, and the problems that I face are all part of God's plan as He shapes my life to be used by Him as His servant.

7.__________________ My contentment depends upon the promise of God to provide for all of my needs- physical, emotional, and spiritual.
